I created this artists book looking into my relationship with mobility aids represented with lino cuts and pressed flowers collected while in my wheelchair then scanned and manipulated in various ways to represent what they give and the beauty that can come from something so feared and stigmatised. I am enquiring into society’s view of disability and how in turn disabled people who both use mobility aids and don’t are treated. With this book I wanted to challenge this view and make art around disability showing my experience through the social model of disability rather than the medical model, which is what the pages from an old medical book are here to represent. The medical model views disability as a problem to be solved and a personal tragedy where as the social model sees inaccessibility within society as the main challenge.
